School History
About  a quarter of mile from the commercial centre of down town of Johor Bahru, just behind the catholic church stand a grey-roofed building where thousands pupils study for their future career. This is St.Joseph School which was founded by Brothers from the St. Gabriel Church in 1939.

The school started off with a one-storey building of five classrooms. The enrollment then was about 100 pulps with only five teaching staff.

During the Japanese Occupation, the school had to be closed. Fortunately, the school building was not destroyed during the war.

In 1946, when the school resumed its role of educating the young generation, five classes were reopened with a staff strength of only four teachers.

In 1950, the capacity of the existing school building was found to be insufficient to copy with the growing number of pulps. A Fun Fair was then organized to raise funds for a new school building. With generous donations from enthusiastic and supportive parents and the pulps, a new block of five classrooms were completed at the end of 1951.

From 1967, the enrollment of the school increased yearly and by 1980 the number of pulps was 715 with 18 teachers. The school was then upgraded from Grade C to Grade B. Mr. Tan Hung Tong was the headmaster from 1967 to 1979.

Although it is a mission school, St . Joseph Chinese School has been taking in pulps of different religions.

In 1983 when the enrollment reached 918 pulps with 23 teacher, the school was upgraded to Grade A school. Mr. Chang Kow Chin became the 11th headmaster of the school.

In 1986, when Mr. Chang was promoted to become the State Organizer of Chinese School in the Education Department of Johor, Mr. Chia Chong took over as the 12th headmaster of the school.

At the end ot 1986, when St . Joseph Secondary School moved to its new premises at Larkin, its existing classrooms were officially taken over by St . Joseph Chinese School. St . Joseph Chinese was then expanded to a much bigger capacity of 15 classrooms, an air - conditioned library and a mini - hall.

At present, the enrollment of the school is 1215. The classes are divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The number of staff is now 49 which includes a headmaster, Senior Assistants, teacher, clerks and general workers.

May SRJK (C) St . Joseph continue to be the pride of our young generations.
